Biography

Javier Valdebenito is an outstanding musician, double bass player, teacher and composer born in the city of Santiago de Chile, he began his guitar studies at an early age and then explored a huge range of musical styles and actively participated as a musician, composer and arranger in groups that allowed him to play in several festivals around the world and win the most important award in his country the Altazor (2013).

But it was in jazz where he found a space to express his creativity that seems to have no end, in 2004 he recorded his first album il jazz crudo and a year later he began a collaboration with the saxophonist Diego Manuschevich with whom he continues to play and record to date.

In 2008 he graduated as a music teacher at the Metropolitan University of Education Sciences (UMCE), with the aim of promoting musical activity among young people, and establishing new pedagogical methodologies that make room for improvisation and jazz.

In 2019, in the midst of a political and social crisis in his country, and fully dedicated to developing the technique in the double bass, he decided to emigrate to Europe to study the master’s degree in free improvisation taught by the cellist Alfred Zimmerlin and the pianist Andrea Neuman in the city of Basel, Switzerland, where he currently resides.

In his role as jazz double bass player he has shared with musicians such as Ryan Carniaux , Jordi Pallares, Diego Manuschevich, Cristian Gallardo, Lautaro Quevedo, Elie Martin Charriere, Matías Mardones, Jasper Huysentruyt, Gabi Guedes, Samuel Dühsler, David Forget , Gabriel Walter among others.

As a free improviser he has shared sessions with musicians such as Christian Weber, Isabelle Duthoit, Harald Kimmig, Catalina Guitierrez, Sabu Toyuzumi, Diego Aguirre, Chirstian Moser, Kenneth Zuckerman, Marianne Schuppe, Alfred Zimmerlin, Andrea Neumann, Raúl Díaz, Tassilo Dellers, Jennifer Walshe, Daniel Studer, Eden Carrasco, among others.

He is currently concentrating on composing for his jazz trio, participates as a session musician in various popular music projects, offers workshops and studies the German language.
